Ian Troxell

BioIan Troxell is a painter born in Upstate New York, who now has his studio in Santa Fe New Mexico. He was born to William Troxell of Oxford NY, a ceramicist for over thirty years whose desire to create art through hard work and craftsmanship inspired Ian to become a painter.

Ian received his B.A. in Painting from Elmira College in New York under the direct tutelage of Marc Dennis, a powerhouse in the contemporary painting realm, whose desire, work ethic and intensity permeated throughout the campus. Dennis’ influences soon became Troxell’s, Ian intensely studied the works of the masters, Caravaggio, Velázquez, and Michelangelo, and these influences can be seen in his work. Strong sketching skills, intense lighting and a strong formal intuition are the cornerstones of Ian’s work today.

Since graduating from Elmira College Ian has traveled extensively, living in Utah, Washington, New York, Massachusetts and New Mexico. While living in Boston, Ian attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School where he excelled and was offered a semester gratis. Ian recently returned from Italy where he studied and viewed works of art in the Renaissance meccas of Florence and Rome.

Ian primarily focuses his art in the media of oil painting specializing in portraiture that is both historical in nature and fresh in content and context. Ian is also an avid photographer, sculptor and is constantly experimenting in new media and medium. Ian is available for commission.
