Ian Troxell

BioIan Troxell is a painter born in Upstate New York, who now has his studio in Santa Fe New Mexico. He was born in Oxford NY, to a ceramicist, who instilled the values of craftsmanship and hard work in Ian.

Ian received his B.A. in Painting from Elmira College in New York under the direct tutelage of Marc Dennis, a powerhouse in the contemporary painting realm, whose desire, work ethic and intensity permeated throughout. Dennis influences soon became Ian's, including Caravaggio, Velazquez, Michelangelo, Sargent, and Tiepolo. Ian intensely studies the works of these masters and their influences can be seen in his work. Strong draftsmanship, intense lighting, luscious paint and a strong formal intuition are the cornerstones of Ian's work today.

Since leaving Upstate New York Ian has traveled extensively, living in Park City, Seattle, Boston, New York City, and Santa Fe. While living in Boston, Ian attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School where he excelled and was offered a semester gratis. Ian has travelled the world in search of great art, from Amsterdam to Rome, New York to Los Angeles, From Florence to Paris, even Christchurch and beyond. Through these travels Ian has gained a unique perspective on painting, which he applies to his own work every day.

Ian primarily focuses his art in the media of oil painting specializing in portraiture that is both historical in nature and fresh in content and context. Ian is also an avid outdoorsman, class IV-V whitewater raft guide, photographer, sculptor, and is constantly experimenting in new media and medium. Available for commission.
